Segment Searching on LexisNexis®

What is a Segment Search?

On LexisNexis, documents are divided into “Segments” which are independently searchable “areas” or “portions” of a document. Usually, when you do a search in any Source on LexisNexis, you search for your search terms throughout the entire, full-text, document. Using a Segment to do a search allows you to tell LexisNexis to only look for your search terms in those specific Segments of a document that you specify.

The LexisNexis www.nexis.com interface has built some Segments into the Search Forms (in each of the topical folders) in the form of fill-in-the-blank fields. However, the Power Search form does not have these specific fields – Segments may be used in the Power Search feature.

Segments can be used through any LexisNexis interface: www.lexis.com, www.nexis.com, or LexisNexis proprietary software.

Each SOURCE on the LexisNexis database has its own specific Segments. Click on the links below to see a list of the most common Segments (with examples) – grouped together by “type” of information.
